TLDR: New vehicle 6/16. HUGE ant infestation problem 6/17. Dealership assessing damage. Any advice for new vehicle or compensation for original?
I purchased a 2017 Toyota Tacoma from a dealership this past Friday. When we went to view the vehicle, it was not on a paved lot. Rather, it was located in a dirt area beside the dealership with some trees scattered around the vehicles. I visually inspected the truck and saw nothing wrong with scratches/dents or anything out of the ordinary. I double checked the vehicle again upon final inspection before driving off the lot. Everything looked perfect: the truck was washed and detailed.
Not even 8 hours into ownership, I take the truck on its first drive to get dinner with my wife and we notice an 2 ants crawling up the outside of the front windshield. I thought nothing of it at the time and brushed it off as random ants.
Fast forward to the next day. My wife and I are driving to the store for groceries and she notices two ants crawling up her leg. We pull over to the nearest gas station and inspect the vehicle. About 20 ants were inside the truck from the vertical window siding and more crawling into the passenger door speaker and nearby A/C unit. I see a bigger concentration of ants coming out of the right side view mirror. Then this happened:
I immediately try to get the ants inside the vehicle out with a vacuum at a nearby car wash. I then called the dealership. Their response was to bring the truck back and have it inspected.
When I arrived, they first dismissed the case as just a minor problem. When I had to convince both the original salesman and the sales manager to see for themselves, their reaction said a lot.
Immediately they gave me a loaner truck and told me they would need a couple of days to check under and inside the truck. I know ants don’t always necessarily chew cables (Correct me if I’m wrong), but from what I’ve read around different sites, it’s their bridging and shorting of electric wires by ruining the contact sites. Dealership told me they’d be in contact with me soon. Salesman told me they may have to get me a replacement vehicle.
Long story short, I’m hoping that I can get a replacement vehicle and just call it a day. However, part of me feels like this may more difficult than that and they might not want to do that. I would not mind getting the original vehicle if they were able to give me some form of compensation for not only the inconvenience, but the huge pest problem with future repercussions.
Any advice or similar experiences from you all? Much appreciated!
