I just helped my parents move last week, and as the resident weekend racecar driver with trailering experience, was asked to drive the 26′ U-Haul we rented. I wrote about the experience on my blog but always love hearing tales of others’ success (and woe) with rented box trucks… so spill ’em.
For the record, we had a newish Ford F-650 with 53k miles and the 6.8L Ford V10. It sounded like a pissed-off garbage disposal at full tilt but was a generally fine truck to drive (the V10 just sounds bad/odd). I’ve had other good experiences with more recent rentals – 17′ GMC and Ford trucks.
My worst was in college. Rented a 17′ (ish?) from a gas station for an in-town move. Ended up with a 15-year-old GMC that had one functional headlight, marginal wipers, a leaky box (these two were discovered because it rained significantly) and a radio that would cut off under heavy acceleration. Thankfully it was only needed for a few hours of one day, and we didn’t have to go far.
Anyway, whatcha got?
